News: BGT celebrates 10th. anniversary on internet
Posted by: Admin on Monday, January 30, 2006 - 10:34 AM
NEWS We would like to take a moment to thank all our customers and friends both old and new here in cyberspace.

The history of

We've come a long way in the last ten years and seen a lot of changes but some things are still the same and we hope they don't change.

For instance over ten years ago, in August 1995 we ordered our first business internet account with the intention of learning about this new medium. Then the internet was mostly information about computers and a lot of small communities in newsgroups. Web pages were not the big thing then and email was mostly free of spam. We hosted our first web page at a local ISP who was running BSD Unix and the httpd web server, the forerunner of Apache.

BSD Unix is still considered the most stable and secure operating system and the Apache web server has grown to become not only the most used web server in the world it is also the premier example for the open source development model.

Hey, what's all this Unix stuff, don't you know its a Windows world? Way back a million internet years ago in January 1996 when we published our first web pages Microsoft had not even sold one web server. link and even Microsoft's web browser (IE) was purchased from Spyglass (a small company and not the market leader) and not invented by MS. link Internet Explorer was not bundled with Windows until the release of Windows 98. Previously it was sold as a stand alone product as required by the license from its original owners. This bundling became a large aspect of an anti-trust law suit which claimed MS used its advantage in operating systems to unfairly put the inventors of the first web browsers and servers out of business.

Where have we been? Well as our experience on the net grew so did our requirements. Our first web site was hosted on a commercial ISP and we only had a small space and totally shared services. Next we purchased our domain name and moved to a dedicated web hosting ISP where we we're happy until we upgraded our office with a 128k ISDN connection and our very first in house web server running multiserver on Linux.

In 2000 we moved to a ADSL line which bumped up our speed to over 1mb a ten times improvement. In 2001 we moved to SME/ e-smith Linux. In 2002 under the stress of spam, million bot nets and fear of crackers we gave up our in house hosting and moved to a co-located server where our bandwidth is higher still and expert technicians and engineers are on hand to maintain and harden the security aspects of our server. In 2004 we opened our first e-commerce store using business tools for verified security and identity validation.

To be on the internet is to be in continuous change and improvement and we will be continuing to develop our web experience to better serve our customers. Thank you.

p.s. I'm trying to dig out some screen shots of the old site, should be up in a few days.
